Problem
A construction company contacted ZERUST®, as they were looking for a corrosion control company to assist with protecting a construction site, while the project was on hold for 12 to 18 months. The construction of a new high-rise building was in the early phase of putting in the underground foundation, and the hole had been dug with a tie-back anchor system installed to hold back the earth. The heavy-duty cables protruding from the tie-back system were exposed to the environmental elements until construction resumed. The engineering company needed to find a way to protect the wire strand cable from corroding while being exposed to the outdoor elements while the construction site sat idle.
Solution
A local ZERUST® Technical Service Representative visited the construction site to complete an on-site evaluation. Following the evaluation, it was determined that ZERUST®/EXCOR® AxxaCoat™ 90 BHFS outdoor corrosion inhibitor would provide the best protection to the wire cable as it offers a durable corrosion preventative coating that can withstand minor nicks and abrasions due to the firm film that forms on the metal surface when dried and can be easily applied with an airless sprayer.
Prior to the application of AxxaCoat™ 90 BHFS, it was recommended that the wire strand cable would need to be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt and mud from the construction site. The customer was going to clean the cables with the use of city water. However, city water contains corrosion causing contaminants so Axxavis™ HST-10 was recommended to be mixed with the water source for the cleaning and rinsing stages. ZERUST® AxxaVis™ HST-10 powder additive deactivates ionic contaminants found in municipal water sources that cause rust and hard water deposits on metals. Once the wire cables were cleaned of the dirt, mud, and containments, a coat of AxxaCoat™ 90 BHFS was applied with the use of an airless sprayer.
