Why?

The manufacturer needed to protect the external surfaces of solenoid bodies during shipment to the OEM. The OEM required shipments of their component in stackable injection molded trays to facilitate robotically picking the components. As a result, traditional ZERUST® VCI bagging was not feasible, and liquid rust preventatives were not an option as well, as cleanliness was essential

How?

ZERUST® recommended the use of ZERUST® VC2-1 Vapor Capsules by centrally affixing them in each container, and with the 1-year use of life, each Vapor Capsule could be used multiple times to protect the external surfaces of the solenoid bodies during transit

Problem

A major manufacturer of highly-engineered components and systems for powertrain applications worldwide needed a specific corrosion solution. The external surfaces of a solenoid body were being subjected to rapid climate changes during shipment to the OEM being supplied. In  addition,   the OEM required shipments of their component in stackable injection molded trays to facilitate robotically picking the components. As a result, traditional ZERUST® VCI bagging of the relatively small solenoid components, both individually or in bulk, was not feasible. Dipping or spraying the components with a liquid rust preventative was also not an option, as cleanliness was essential.

Solution

Given the specific requirements for cleanliness and accommodating the robotic picking of the components at the OEM assembly line, the recommendation was made to use a ZERUST® VCI diffuser product. The stacks of injection molded containers and lids formed an air-tight enclosure, a great application for the ZERUST® Vapor Capsule. A ZERUST® VC2-1 Vapor Capsule was centrally located in each container and secured in position using the self-adhering strip on the backside. Because of the 1-year use of life, each Vapor Capsule had multiple uses. The replacement period was provided by recording the date of the initial installation (upper righthand corner of the capsule label).
